The Demo Tape

The Demo Tape album cover

Released: 1993

It was 10 years after the band’s break-up when members of the Seattle band thread learned that their 1993 self-produced demo tape was being shared on the internet as an early Alice In Chains bootleg. This accidental misattribution served to bring thread's music out of the 90s Seattle music scene and to a present-day, worldwide audience. Since then, thread's entire catalog of music has been made available, receiving much positive feedback from fans of the early Seattle sound.

Early on, thread was influenced by Seattle bands such as Alice In Chains, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden. These influences show up prominently on their first demo tape. Meticulously recorded on a 4-track in their practice space, it's rough edges give it a charm that tends to get lost in more elaborate productions. The dominant, heavy guitar tones are softened by serene, catchy vocal harmonies. These five songs about love, loneliness and a struggle for belonging serve as a time capsule, bringing the listener back to a distinct time and place in music history.
